The Magnolia State. Bordered on the west by the Mississippi River. Originally explored by the Spanish in 1540 but then a French colony in 1699. Location of many large plantations worked by slaves in 19th century. Badly damaged in Civil War. Heart of Civil Right movement in 20th century. Still one of the poorest states.
